Furnishing Utopia 2017
--
Design Within Reach presents Furnishing Utopia. The group underscores the influence of Shaker design on modernist furniture and interiors, while providing context for many of the materials, colors, and silhouettes so predominant in the present-day global design community. Led by Oregon-based Studio Gorm, 14 international design studios have created more than 55 original objects – all displayed alongside the original Shaker artifacts that served as inspiration.
New for the 2017 Furnishing utopia exhibition is the Drop-leaf bench. The Drop Leaf Bench utilizes the overhanging seat pad for lateral support and is inspired by the variety of joinery and construction techniques used by the Shakers. The upholstered wool seat has two textile hinges that fold down in assembly to xate the massive oak legs. The bench is composed of 4 parts that assemble with with sliding dovetails and only 4 screws.
