COLUNA VASE
—
The Coluna Vases are a set of hand thrown vases, where the strict geometric vessels juxtaposes the character of the textured clay. The vases are handcrafted by master ceramicist João Lourenço using Pasta Grés Chamotada - he experimented by mixing different grain sizes to create a coarse clay that resembles rammed earth. João, driven by his passion for this craft, has explored throughout the years different ceramic pastes, oven temperatures and firing techniques, allowing him to create a unique material with rich earth tones and a granular surface. Hallgeir Homstvedt approached the design of the Coluna Vases from a functional starting point and created two different volumes for medium sized bouquets or larger assemblies with shorter stems.

MIO
—
“We originally designed Mio to complement Hjelle’s Ami sofa program; however, as the family of occasional tables developed, they immediately took on a life of their own. Featuring a lapped steel framework that supports two circular planes, Mio simultaneously references modernist architecture with its daring cantilevers and the primitive legibility of Enzo Mari’s Autoprogettazione. The table surfaces are available in a range of materials that include a softly profiled solid oak, tinted glass and Larvikitt granite, the iconic Norwegian stone instantly recognized by its crystalline structure. Additionally, Mio comes flat packed and is assembled in minutes with just a few screws.”

AMI
__
“As we considered existing upholstered furniture and examined the lifespan of each product through the lens of sustainability, this decoupling revealed a more forward thinking design that we had originally imagined. The inspiration for the Ami series sprang from our desire to explore the reduction of the archetypal lounge chair to its component parts – the frame and the upholstery”

Dims’ first sofa designed by Takagi Homstvedt. Inspired by the sleek curves of Italian cars in the 60s, the Alfa sofa is characterized by its rounded silhouette. The cushions are noticeably plush yet tidy, giving the sofa its structured look. Another distinguishing feature is the long legs that disappear into the sofa’s upswept backside, balancing the design’s substantial size with an element of lightness.
The Alfa is offered in a 3-seater and a 2-seater option in six sustainably-produced Kvadrat textile colorways: Primer Green, Mélange Blue, Shell Pink, Toasted Ecru, Ikat Red and Off-White. The legs are available in Ash Wood and Black Powder-Coated Steel.
The thing I like about Alfa is that it has this visual lightness. For instance, we have quite a big seat but it’s still visually light because it looks like there’s nothing holding it up — the structure is all internal. I think we ended up with something that’s quite unique in a world where so much looks the same. People want objects to look recognizable — yet they rarely want to go too far out on a limb. There’s a fine line and I think we found a nice balance here.

Ori chair
—
True to the Stellar Works mindset, the Ori chair is a gentle mix of Nordic and Asian influences. The softly shaped outline of the chair is only interrupted by the sharp fold in the seat and backrest, marking the zones that are in contact with the body. The slender frame is inspired by the type of bamboo scaffolding that is just tied together, commonly used in Asia (Hong Kong). Similarly the frame of the chair is composed of gently curved segments of tube that just kiss each other at the point where they overlap, creating a light and organic structure. The Ori chair is designed for the places where people gather to enjoy a meal and interact, whether at home or in public spaces. Ori comes with or without an armrest and stacks well for easy storage.

Inspiration for this collection comes from the Moiré phenomenon. A visual effect that accurse when two patters with for example stripes are layered on top of each other, and a feeling of movement appears. The stripes and the movements in the design gives associations to the lines and the speed found on a an athletics track. Bislett, Oslo’s main athletics track, has a local anchorage for me, and thereof the name Bislett — designer Hallgeir Homstvedt.

The entire exhibition was designed to be reused after the Milan show was over, so all the displays where flat-packed and installed/uninstalled in a few days. To achieve this the designers used rails and clamps to hang the walls from the existing architecture. Sustainable materials like Valchromat, aluminium and linen was used to create the temporary spaces.

FURNISHING UTOPIA - 2018
—
Design Within Reach presents Furnishing Utopia 3.0: Hands to Work, the third in a series of exhibitions exploring the design legacy of the Shakers.
This year, the collective is opening up a dialogue between designers and viewers intended to transcend Shaker aesthetics. Designers were asked to explore the virtues of focused work and cleanliness that the Shakers regarded as a path to enlightenment.
The theme of chores, conventionally understood as tedious, burdensome work to be avoided, reexamines our concepts of these activities and the tools related to them, proposing a renewed sense of engagement between humans, objects and their environment in the pursuit of a more virtuous way of living through ritualizing the mundane, with the potential for clearing one’s mind, connecting with one’s body and confronting the indifference of the natural world.
PAPER BIN
--
The one chore I do most frequently is tidying the apartment in the form of putting things back where they belong – laundry, dishes, sorting recycling into different bins, etc. Having the proper tools, like a dedicated paper bin in the office, makes these chores that much more enjoyable. I was drawn to the cork fabric material because of its natural look and its properties. To better control the shape of the paper bin, wooden splines were inserted in the top and bottom, giving it a perfectly round footprint, and while seen from the side it has a softer and more textile character. The handle is a reference to Shaker buckets and baskets.

Together with the Norwegian designers Runa Klock and Hallgeir Homstvedt, Abstracta takes a new step in the ambition to create better soundscapes. The result is Lily - a acoustic lamp that also contributes to visual calm in public and open office spaces.
Lily, 120 cm in diameter, is intended to be used in bigger spaces, such as restaurants, large atrium's and open office areas, environments where noise levels are high and where the amount of visual information can be great.
"We want Lily to increase the intimacy of big rooms, by defining a room in a room and distinct zones,» says the designers. They prefer to hang the lamp in clusters, inspired by the flower giving its name.

Furnishing Utopia 2017
--
Design Within Reach presents Furnishing Utopia. The group underscores the influence of Shaker design on modernist furniture and interiors, while providing context for many of the materials, colors, and silhouettes so predominant in the present-day global design community. Led by Oregon-based Studio Gorm, 14 international design studios have created more than 55 original objects – all displayed alongside the original Shaker artifacts that served as inspiration.
New for the 2017 Furnishing utopia exhibition is the Drop-leaf bench. The Drop Leaf Bench utilizes the overhanging seat pad for lateral support and is inspired by the variety of joinery and construction techniques used by the Shakers. The upholstered wool seat has two textile hinges that fold down in assembly to xate the massive oak legs. The bench is composed of 4 parts that assemble with with sliding dovetails and only 4 screws.

NiU
--
NiU is a modular sofa inspired by a box that opens and gives you a glimpse of what lies hidden inside. The walls lean back and to the side, giving the sofa a dynamic character that is interesting from every angle. The details of NiU are thoroughly considered; upholstery, the use of materials and stitch details are all emphasized when developing this sofa.
Hallgeir Homstvedt says: «In Catalan «niu» means «nest», and that is exactly what I wanted to create with the NiU sofa; a zone shielded from the surrounding interior with high walls, an inside filled with soft cushions and a generous depth made to share.»
NiU has two basic modules; 1,5 seater and 2 seater. By offering these modules with or without armrests, and with or without a back, the opportunities are many. The modules can be combined in different ways and perfectly adapt to various spaces or needs – almost like a bird puts together its nest, piece by piece. The two base modules can be added and combined in different variations to create everything from a corner sofa to a single daybed.

The exhibition showcases the collaborative works of: Jonah Takagi and Hallgeir Homstvedt, Assembly Design and Morten & Jonas, Ladies & Gentlemen Studio and Vera & Kyte, Bower and Bjørn Van Den Berg, Farrah Sit and Silje Nesdal.
PENNE
--
The Penne project began with the desire to explore a medium and process that was completely new to us. We had collaborated on projects before, but there was always an element of familiarity in either the typology or the material. Designing around a new material and process gave us the freedom to start fresh.
We decided early on to make a series of vessels and after some though we arrived on the process of extruded ceramic. This process has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years, and is most commonly associated with the manufacture of bricks and honeycomb particle filters. Extrusion is the process of forcing a softened material through a die at high pressure that results in a profiled shape that can be trimmed to virtually any length. We wished to explore this process in the attempt to create a form that is only achievable through extrusion and settled on a beaded texture applied to a family of small vases.
In hindsight, the textures closely resemble that of penne pasta, which also happens to be an extruded product.
PENNE & FLIP FLOP
--
Flip Flop is a subtle reinterpretation of the doored cabinet that is inspired by switches, Jacob’s Ladder folk toys and the wooden furniture of Børge Morgensen. Utilizing traditional joinery and solid oak wood construction, Flip Flop features a single door centered in the cabinet’s width that swings freely in both directions. This reconfiguration of an archetypal furniture form, allows for objects on it’s shelves to be displayed or hidden by way of a simple gesture, swinging the door from side to side. Because of this, the piece appears to be in limbo; never fully open and never fully closed, a balancing act between the public and the private. In use, one might store personal items on one side of the cabinet while on the other side it might contain items for display.

BERGEN
--
Bergen was originally developed for a project to a university in Bergen, Norway. After further development the chair is now part of the Offecct furniture collection, and is available in a wide variety of textiles and leather like show here.
“I designed this chair for the competition which I won for the furnishing of the newly renovated auditorium in the Bergen University, originally built in 1894. The imposing window valves in the room were important as inspiration. The shapes are reflected in the square back and the circular seat. The chair’s character lies in the meeting between these two surfaces, giving the impression of floating in the air, with only a small concealed point of attachment. This gives the chair a minimalistic and slender character, with good stacking capacity. The brief for the competition stated that the auditorium must hold four hundred seated audience members, but that it can quickly and swiftly be refurnished for a dinner for a hundred people.” / Hallgeir Homstvedt

FAUNA
--
Fauna is a range of animal figures inspired by and created from rocks found in the Nordic countries. We found that many of the earth-tone colors present in the rocks are also present in the native fauna. The inherent colors and patterns in the stone where used to make the characters come to life. The choice of animals fell upon humble, but also distinct animals with strong characteristics that are close to heart. The interpretation of the bullfinch bird, red fox, puffin bird and hedgehog have been made into one simplified figurative series and one more abstract series within the shape of a square.
The Fauna series is largely made up of granite, one of the most common types of rock found in the north. It is hard and tough, just as the climate in the northern hemisphere. Working with stone on a scale this small is a challenge, so using a harder type of rock such as granite enabled us to create more precise cuts and details.
Hege says "working with materials that are millions of years old to create something new, gives us both respect and inspiration".
The project was especially developed for the 100% Norway exhibition in London in 2015. One industrial and one graphic designer – two siblings; we have joined our creative forces to work on this project.

GROWLIGHT
--
The unending winter season can be pretty dark in Scandinavia, and a lot of plants will be happy to get some extra light whether in the office or at home. Growlight is a lamp that can be plunged directly into the soil of any plant in need of extra light. There is also a table version with a marble base to place your sun-deprived plants on.
Hallgeir Homstvedt says “the Growlight project started with a desire to introduce more greenery in the work environment.” Research shows that the right combination of light and plants has significant health benefits, both physically and psychologically. "When setting out to design a lamp for plants, it was important to design a lamp that would not compete for attention, but rather complement or blend with the plants' inherent beauty."
The Growlight draws inspiration from flowers, trees and fungi, with their slender stem and large canopy. Another important feature is the lamp's ability to “grow” with the plant. The shade can be easily adjusted in height and angle through a unique magnetic solution. With the Growlight we wanted to offer an alternative to existing solutions, with a more playful approach to design and use.
The Growlight was developed for Elementa, a small Norwegian furniture brand with a desire to change the way we work.

The UT system is comes as a single desk, benches for 2 to 4 people or a height-adjustable version so you want to enjoy your plants both while sitting and standing.

LUI
--
The Lui chair was designed for the newly renovated assembly hall at the University of Bergen. 10 design offices where invited and submitted their proposals for the new University chair where the Lui concept was crowned as the winner.
The shape of the chair is directly inspired by the large windows that dominated most of the walls in the building. Besides the name Lui has strong references to the classic Louis XV chair, with its oval back and square seat. Only here, used the other way around.
The seat and backrest have a sense of floating in the air, with only a point of tangency linking them together. The round seat gives the chair a light and playful character and is a nice contrast to the more rigid and formal backrest. Since the auditoriums main function is to accommodate large events, great focus has been placed on designing a chair that contributes to a neat and calm picture of the space. When the hall is fully furnished, the mass of more than 400 chairs create neat rows from the rectangular backrests, the personal zone formed by the round seat only becomes evident when you go to sit down.
Production wise, the goal was to draw an ergonomic, versatile chair that fulfills all the requirements for the auditorium. To ensure a optimal and consistent acoustic levels in the room, the chair is designed to have the same sound absorption capacity as a person in the audience. To allow for a flexible use of the room, the chair has excellent stackable properties, allowing for easy storage in a limited space. A chair and barstool in wood was developed for the cafeteria on the 2nd floor.

PAL & PAL BARSTOOL

DESIGN PROCESS
When I was a kid I tried to make my own skateboard in the garage by bending a piece of plywood. The project was a limited success since it turned out too thick and heavy or too thin and flexible. I lacked the concave shape in my decks that enable commercial skateboards to be just 10 mm thick and still tough enough to jump on without breaking. When I was sketching on stool concepts for One Nordic, the idea of using this technique came back to me. By placing the legs on the outside perimeter of the seat, the legs would naturally need to bend in order to follow this shape. This meant that I could work with legs that are wide and really thin compared to the ordinary leg on a chair.
The next challenge came when trying to make the legs detachable to fit in with the One Nordic philosophy. Esthetically the legs are easily made detachable, but for structural strength and stability we needed to develop a special joint together with the development team. We came
up with a great solution that allows the legs to be assembled by the customer without any extra tools.
--
The Pal bar stool retains all the advantages of the low stool - easy assembly, lightweight sturdiness, affordability - while its extra height makes it perfect for bars and restaurants as well as kitchen counters. Designed by Hallgeir Homstvedt, the slender, curved legs were inspired by skateboard-making techniques and attach to the curved base through an ingenious X-shaped joint. The metal bracket on the legs makes for added strength and stability.

BALANCE
--
The Balance Vase sets are designed by Hallgeir Homstvedt for Muuto. Balance is a set that mix different shapes and contemporary colors of vases and trays. The vases are casted in colored clay and the tray in steel. Keeping the vases and trays together is a strong hidden magnet, which locks them in an upright balanced position while at the same time allowing the vases to be moved around on the tray, for a personalized look. Balance is both available in a 1 vase-set and 3-vase set in several color combinations.
HALLGEIR HOMSTVEDT ON THE DESIGN “I wanted to play with the concept of visual balance when designing the Balance vase set, and offer a new perspective on a vase. My idea was to create an object that naturally engages the observer’s curiosity and creativity. Most vases look empty without flowers, but the Balance vases are almost like sculptural silhouettes that you can personalize and arrange the way you desire, with or without flowers.”

THE GROOVE TRIVETS are designed by Norwegian designer Hallgeir Homstvedt for MUUTO. The trivets come in two different sizes and are made of raw marble in either white, grey or green.
HALLGEIR HOMSTVEDT ON THE DESIGN “Trivets are normally stowed away when not in use, yet I wanted to create a beautiful object, which can add to the atmosphere and bear being displayed. The linear grooves in the marble give the trivets a graphic expression and serves as a nice contrast to the natural structures and patterns in the marble. Leave the GROOVE trivets on the table even when not in use and let them add character to your interior.”

The Chamber Light is perfect for dark winter months around the dinner table or
the lovely summer evenings outside. The handle makes it easily portable and
serves as a friendly reminder that you can always bring the light wherever you
need it.
Designer Hallgeir Homstvedt says, “Originally I set out to design a modern version of the classic kerosene lamp with the glass chimney and brass tray. In the design process I looked mostly to ceramics and electrical lighting for inspiration. The final design is a hurricane that has a contemporary feel, with clear referencesto classic candle holders and oil lamps”.

Herman clock
--
The Herman clock is designed for the bedroom and other rooms that shifts between daylight and darkness. The dail of the clock paints a graphic picture of black and white lines, dividing the display in 12 zones, one for each hours of the day. The white lines are made of a fluorescent material that is "charged" by daylight and creates a glowing display in the dark. A major influence has been optical illusions like the Hermann grid, where a visual distortion caused by black and white lines makes you see patterns that are not there.
The deep frame of the clock draws your focus towards the display and acts as a shade for the florescent light at night time. A solid cast iron body gives the clock a unique character that resembles a lamp as much as it does a clock.

KAVAI
--
Kavai is a small lounge chair designed for lobbies, waiting areas or anywhere else one appreciates a good armchair but don't have too much space. The chair has a distinct profile, with a slender body and a generous armrest sweeping the top edge, much like a collar on a shirt.
The brief was to create a characteristic club or lounge chair big on comfort but not in size. Early in the design process I focused on the importance of a good armrest. I found that in order to truly relax in a seated situating, what to do with you hands is just as important as the softness of the seat. The armrest on Kavai envelopes your body much like a winter coat hugs your neck. The angle of the armrest gradually drops off towards the back, providing support for your arms while making room from the elbows to slip down to a comfortable height.
Kavai is designed for L.K.Hjelle, who prides it self on been the premier producer of upholstered furniture in Norway. The chair comes in two different versions; a classic 4 legged version and an metal frame version.

GLOW clock
--
The prototype with the same name was first shown in Milan 2011, is now a reality for the renowned producer Lexon.
The name derives from the glow created by the contrasting color behind the hands that reflect onto the white dial of the clock. The hands of the clock have slight variation in thickness and the length of the glow in order make it easier to read time. A clear and almost invisible screen sits flush with the frame to seal and protect clock.

TOPP lamp
--
The Topp Lamp draws its inspiration from two distinctive silhouettes: the classic ‘Atollo’ lamp by Viso Magistretti and a graphic arrow. The foot is of strong resin available in black, white and yellow. Each colour contrasts strikingly with the aluminium shade. The beautiful spun top allows the geometric simplicity of the shapes that make up the lamp to be appreciated fully – the triangular and rectangular shapes are distinct but compliment each other to create a pleasing, arresting whole. Topp’s presence will add contemporary sophistication to domestic or contract interiors.
